1856-1937. He was an American painter born at Hingham, Massachusetts. He married heiress Matilda E. Travers, the daughter of prominent New York City investor and co-founder of Saratoga Race Course, William R. Travers. In 1876 the couple moved to Paris, France where Walter Gay became a pupil of Leon Bonnat. They lived in an apartment on the Left Bank and in 1907 purchased Chateau Le Breau on a three-hundred-acre walled park near the Forest of Fontainebleau. Walter Gay received an honorable mention in the Paris Salon of 1885; a gold medal in 1888, and similar awards at Vienna (1894), Antwerp (1895), Berlin (1896) and Munich (1897). 1815-1852 Realism Russian Russian painter and draughtsman. He was noted for his satirical critique of Russian life of the mid-19th century. He attended the First Moscow Military School (1826-33), then served in St Petersburg in the Finnish Regiment Life-Guards. While earning a reputation as an honest and hard-working officer, he drew a great deal, played the flute and took part in amateur theatrical performances. Having become established as the regimental artist, in 1834 he began to attend evening classes at the St Petersburg Academy of Arts. In November 1843, after a long period of doubt, he resigned his commission in the army in order to become a professional artist. He began to attend the Academy regularly and joined the battle-painting class of Aleksander Zauerveid (1783-1844),
Simon Pietersz Verelst
(1644, The Hague - 1710, London), was a Dutch Golden Age painter. According to the RKD he was the son of Pieter Harmensz Verelst and became a pupil in the Confrerie Pictura at the same time as his brother Herman in 1663. In 1668 he moved to London and called himself "the God of Flowers", but is known for portraits as well as flower and fruit still life paintings.
